Gas Price Comparisons

Archived in the category: Common Cents

With the recent record-setting gasoline prices, the online websites with almost real-time prices for competing gasoline outlets have become increasingly popular. While these websites aren’t exactly new, they are considered to be more relevant than they were when the prices were much lower.

We don’t recommend any specific gas price comparions website over another, but they are easy enough to find and we do encourage you to check them out yourself.

A word of caution however – We’ve seen recently that prices displayed on the various websites are not accurate. In some cases, they aren’t even close to the price at the pump. So, while it is recommended that you use the data from these websites as a guide, you should still verify that the price posted at the gas station is what you’re expecting.

Also for this reason, we do not recommend that you travel any distance out of your way seeking a minor savings in gasoline. It’s possible that you’ll find a different price when you get there, and then you have also wasted the gasonline for the trip.

Falling Oil

Archived in the category: energy

At the moment of this writing, the wholesale price of crude oil continues to drop. This is finally allowing for some noticeable relief at the gasoline pumps. Although, the price is still significantly higher than it was a year ago, and consumers are still feeling the effects via higher prices in other goods and services.

This is not a time to be complacent however.

The only way that energy prices will continue this downward trend – or even maintain their current prices – is by continued fuel conservation and greater pushes toward alternative fuels.

If you learned to drive less when gasoline was over $4 per gallon, you should continue that trend even as the prices drops closer to $3 per gallon.

When it’s time to replace your vehicle, it will be in your best interest to purchase the most fuel efficient model that fits your needs. Or, preferably, a hybrid.

All indicators are that fuel prices will return to their upward trend at some point in the future – probably sooner rather than later. Don’t get caught unprepared.

Gasoline And Tires

Archived in the category: cars

We’ve all heard this before, yet so many drivers continue to neglect their tire air pressure.

You can save up to $100 (or more with current prices!) a year on gas simply by keeping your tires inflated to their proper pressure.

Purchase an accurate tire guage and check the pressure weekly. Always check the pressure when the tires are “cold”. Even leaving the car parked in the direct sunlight will cause changes in the pressure as the air heats up.

Consider investing in a small, inexpensive, air compressor to keep in your garage. People are more likely to monitor their air pressure and add more air as needed if they can do it from the convenience of their own home.

Gasoline Snobs

Archived in the category: Common Cents

Buy the lowest grade (octane) gasoline for your car, unless the car’s owner’s manual specifically says that you must use higher octane gasoline.

Using higher octane “premium” gas will not result in better gas mileage or additional power. It will only further line the pockets of the oil companies.
