You Don’t Need Public Storage

Archived in the category: Common Cents

If you are renting a public storage facility, chances are you’ve got too much stuff. Sell something and make room at home. Not only will you gain a bit of money from the sale, you’ll save 100% of the storage rental fees.

There are some very specific justifications for public storage, but even in those rare cases you’ll be better off if you can store your stuff with family or friends.

This is an easy savings of $30-$100 per month, or more.

Save on Postage

Archived in the category: Common Cents

When shipping printed or recorded material, such as books, CDs, or DVDs, you will generally save money shipping via Media Mail instead of Priority Mail or First Class. Bring your package to the post office and ask the clerk for the comparative postage costs.

Media Mail is best used for packages weighing more than a pound, and it will take longer for delivery. Using ZIP+4 can speed up Media Mail for no extra charge.

If the package weighs less than a pound, First Class might actually be cheaper, or close enough to not justify the slower delivery of Media Mail.
